HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A 29-year-old man is facing two years in prison after being found guilty of family violence.
On Monday, the Office of the Attorney General issued a press release announcing that Jay Boi Elias, 29, was found guilty of family violence and violation of a court order as misdemeanors in the Superior Court of Guam.
The release explains the jury returned the verdict within half an hour of deliberation and faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison, which the prosecution will be seeking at Elias’ sentencing hearing.
“We will seek the maximum sentence against this convicted criminal to protect the crime victims and secure just punishment. Cowards who hurt women should remain in prison to break the cycle of abuse. When it comes to family violence, once is too much,” the AG’s Office stated in its press release.
Elias was initially charged with advanced stalking, family violence, violation of a court order and assault in April last year.
According to the magistrate’s complaint, Elias’ charges stem first from an incident in October 2021 when a woman accused Elias of assaulting her in her vehicle after he became angry about her whereabouts on a Saturday night.
The woman explained Elias allegedly called her a “thot” and a “peasant” before he “grabbed the back of her head and pushed her head into the seatbelt area of the vehicle,” the complaint stated.
Elias at that point stated, “The next time he sees her he will rip off all her clothes and embarrass her, and beat everyone up around her,” according to the complaint.
Another incident was reported in February 2022 after Elias came to the woman’s home, allegedly grabbed her bag with belongings including house keys and car keys and ran away, which left the woman and her children stranded.
Additionally, the woman said before that incident, Elias began yelling profanities at the woman and her friend at a bar before allegedly taking her car keys out of her hand.
Court records at the time indicated Elias was ordered to stay away from the woman.
