Residents find woman allegedly running from police in a closet

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Homeowners reportedly discovered a woman on the lam from police hiding in their closet.

The woman identified in a magistrate complaint as Sara Katerina Moniz allegedly stole a 2020 Hyundai Tucson. The vehicle was seen by police motoring on Macheche Avenue on Oct. 26.

“Officers activated their lights and siren to attempt to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed,” the complaint said.

Authorities pursued the vehicle until it hit a bus stop on Banana Lane in Mangilao and was no longer operable.

The driver, who was later identified as Moniz, fled the scene. Police later discovered she had attempted to hide in a home.

The homeowners told police that Moniz was hiding inside a closet of their residence without permission.

They “pushed her out of the residence,” the complaint said.

Police were able to locate Moniz as she was walking down the driveway of the residence.

Police said a search of the allegedly stolen vehicle revealed a “used syringe and resealable baggies with suspected methamphetamine residue.”

According to authorities, Moniz had an active bench warrant, and she stated that she “freaked out” when she saw the police car.

Moniz was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as a third-degree felony with the special allegation of commission of a felony while on felony release; eluding a police officer; vehicle without identification; criminal trespass; and unauthorized use of a vehicle – each as misdemeanors.

She was confined at the Department of Corrections with bail set at $3,OOO.
