Michael Jesse Aguon Manalo is escorted by a Corrections officer after a bail hearing on Monday morning.
MICHAEL Jesse Aguon Manalo has been arrested for breaking and entering New CK Market, and taking cash, food stamp coupons, and other items.
Manalo, 30, who was charged with burglary and theft, also has two active bench warrants for failing to appear in court for his involvement in two separate burglary and theft cases.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho imposed a $25,000 cash bail on the defendant at a bail hearing Monday morning.
Manalo was represented by Assistant Public Defender Emily Thomsen, while Assistant Attorney General Steve Kessell appeared for the government.
The defendant was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and was ordered to return to court on Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. for a preliminary hearing, and on Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. for an arraignment.
According to the complaint against Manalo, the New CK Market store manager told investigators that when he entered the establishment on the morning of Oct. 4, he noticed that something was wrong.
He said he saw two plastic bags filled with store items placed near the entrance. He then went around the store’s exterior and saw that the back door was open.
The store manager said about $5,000 cash, $3,000 in food stamp coupons, $1,000 worth of assorted cigarettes, and other equipment valued at $1,200 were taken from the establishment.
An iPhone 6 valued at $1,000 was also stolen, he added.
Manalo was identified as the culprit after detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the store and previous encounters with him.
During questioning, Manalo admitted breaking into the store because he was “hungry.”
Manalo identified himself in the surveillance footage as the person inside the store, and the person who tossed a white plastic bag over a fence with a blue bag containing food stamp coupons.
