Murder suspect has parole revoked in 2019 case

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man suspected of shooting and killing a man in Maite last month has had his parole revoked in a prior case.

On Thursday evening, Jayson Sowas appeared before the Guam Parole Board for a preliminary revocation hearing.

According to the board, Sowas was placed on parole for three years in March of this year for two 2019 felony cases.

The board continued by explaining that Sowas has committed several parole violations since his release.

Sowas was found to have committed a crime when he was arrested on Sept. 7 on suspicion of criminal mischief, but was not charged. Additionally Sowas was charged days later, on Sept. 11, with murder as a first-degree felony.

According to Post files, Sowas’ charge stems from the fatal shooting of Benedic Beram at the Wash and Dry Laundromat in Maite.

The remainder of Sowas’ parole violations included Sowas not checking in with parole officers since his release in March, possessing a firearm and failing to notify his parole officers of his arrests.

After the board read the violations, Sowas was asked to plead guilty, not guilty or no contest to the violations.

Sowas, who appeared before the Guam Parole Board via Zoom from the Department of Corrections Hågatña Detention Facility, pleaded guilty to the violations.

The plea of guilty to the violations does not apply to the current murder charges Sowas faces, but only to the parole violations.

Following Sowas’ plea, Parole Board Chair Stephen Guerrero asked if Sowas had anything to say, in particular, about why the board shouldn’t revoke Sowas’ parole.

“No, nothing,” Sowas replied.

Since Sowas had no response, the meeting ended before Guerrero explained Sowas would be advised of the board’s decision.

On Friday morning, Parole Officer III Dean Taitague confirmed with The Guam Daily Post the board decided to revoke Sowas’ parole.
