Hopwood triumphs over Mount Carmel in overtime

WHEN the dust settled, Hopwood Middle School  was left standing after outlasting Mount Carmel School in the overtime period of a boys middle school division game of the IT&E Interscholastic Basketball League SY23-24 on Friday at the Marianas High School gym. 

MCS played well with Joey Mostales leading the assault in the first half with four points while Jener Pineda, James Matsumoto, and Dylan Niric  contributed a bucket each. HMS teamwork also shared the spotlight with great ball movements to trail by just one point, 7-8. 

In the second half the pace started to pick up. MCS drew a handful of fouls and converted free throw shots. But HMS answered with high-percentage attempts courtesy of Evan Cabrera and Jerico Manuel to tie the game, 21-21, and force the first overtime of the season. 

HMS then allowed to MCS to score just one shot while Hopwood’s Leon Galarse and Ioane Camacho stepped up with four points apiece to secure the win, 29-23.

Winners, too

Joining the winner’s circle were MCS JV, which won over SIS via forfeit; HMS JV, which beat Saipan Community School, 24-10; Agape Christian School, which outscored Dandan Middle School, 41-35; and Francisco M. Sablan Middle School, which trounced Tanapag Middle School, 54-23.
