HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The driver who died in a traffic crash in Sinajana over the weekend was identified as 41-year-old David Junior Maech Topasna.
Around 2 a.m. Saturday, officers with the Guam Police Department responded to a serious traffic crash near a Guam Power Authority pump station on Route 4 in Sinajana.
According to GPD, a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero “lost control and veered off the roadway” before colliding with a chain-link fence and crashing into the GWA chlorine station at the GPA/GWA pump station A-23/25.”
The driver was subsequently transported to Naval Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On Wednesday, GPD spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella confirmed the driver’s next of kin were located and identified the driver to be Topasna, a 41-year-old man from Sinajana.
Savella said, after the collision, a “fire engulfed the vehicle” and four individuals provided assistance and pulled Topasna out of the vehicle before it “was fully consumed in flames.” The Guam Fire Department extinguished the fire before it could cause more damage.
An investigation conducted by GPD’s Highway Patrol Division remains open and ongoing, as the cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
The crash marks the island’s 19th serious traffic crash and 23rd fatality this year, according to Savella.
