The deputy director of CUC water/sewer group, Bruce Megarr, told the Variety that the new Kannat Tabla water tank has been in operation for three weeks now and has been providing water to several communities on island in an effort to address water service interruptions.
The CUC water/sewer chief said the water tank was sterilized.
CUC began working on a new water tank since the NMC reservoir was decommissioned two years ago, Megarr said.
The NMC tank, together with some saddle tanks, can hold about half a million gallons of water.
The Kannat Tabla water tank costs about $1.3 million in federal funds.
Megarr said CUC has also installed two generators for its Kagman booster pumps.
The generators are necessary for the continuous operation of the pump during a power outage, he said.
Megarr said they will try to install generators for the other booster pumps on island.
Recently, CUC’s Maui 1 booster pump suffered a breakdown due to problems with its bearing and shaft.
The breakdown affected Koblerville where there was no water service for three days.
CUC and the Water Task Force have already replaced the faulty bearing and shaft.
There are 17 booster pumps on island, CUC said.
