PSS eyes 2010 deadline for principals’ certification requirement

Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all classroom teachers should be considered highly qualified on or before July 31, 2010 if schools want to remain eligible for federal grants.

As reported by the Variety on Jan. 23, 2008, only five of the 38 school administrators had complied with the full certification requirements.

These are the principals of Kagman High School, Garapan Elementary School, Rota High School and the principal and vice principal of Marianas High School.

Four principals are receiving the maximum salary which is $60,000 per annum.

PSS human resources officer Ramon Diaz said those who have yet to obtain the needed requirement are still working for the schools in an acting capacity, and they will get the compensation provided to the permanent principals after 90 days as acting principals.

PSS pays $50,000 for principal 1; $55,000, principal II; and $60,000, principal III.

Diaz said it is his office’s recommendation to set the HQT deadline for administrators in 2010.

HQT administrators have master’s degrees, at least six years experience and have been awarded administrator’s certificates.

Last school year, PSS had 38 administrators for its 20 public schools on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.
