Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said that based on the findings of the Fire Prevention Section, the fire at the MGM garment factory on July 9 started at the sewing department/section but the cause of the fire was “still undetermined.”
Ogumuro said the findings of arson investigators showed that the factory building had collapsed and was damaged due to heat transfer.
The dormitory on the east side as well as four 40-footer containers were burned and damaged as a result of the heat transfer.
Ogumuro said further scene investigation revealed that the fire originated within the sewing department/section of the factory as shown by the heavy charring, bended steel poles and beams and scaling of concrete floorings within the immediate vicinity of the sewing section/department.
“The findings showed these are indications of extensive heat damage,” Ogumoro said.
Over a couple of weeks ago, DPS Commissioner Claudio Norita said fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
The fire at MGM started at 4:52 a.m. on July 9 and was brought under control at 3:30 p.m. by responding units. There were no injuries or fatalities reported but over 200 workers were rendered homeless.
