THE Kultura Basketball Academy successfully hosted the first day of the “Taga Hoops” four-month program with a total of 27 participants Saturday at the Agape Christian School gym.

Staff member Kina Rangamar said from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., members of the 6-9 age group were introduced to fundamental basketball skills incorporated with games.

“We worked on coordination and dribbling skills, but we also wanted to make them see it as a game rather than practice or training,” Rangamar said.

Regarding the program participants, she said, “To see them come out and enjoy the sport is fulfilling.”

Rangamar said she was fortunate enough to be taught by her father, Elias Rangamar, the academy instructor and the NMI national coach.

She said the program will give young players the opportunity to grow, gain skills and develop. “These kids are about to do that —  get started in the grassroots and get basketball growing again,” she added.

The training session for the 10-12 age group took place from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and focused on skill-building and fundamentals.

Assistant coach Lia Rangamar, Kina’s sister, said: “What we hope to do is get more kids to fall in love with basketball…. By the end of the program, we hope to have kids confident in the sport of basketball.”
