FOR the fourth consecutive year, Marianas High School has won the girls high school division championship of the IT&E Interscholastic Basketball League, beating Saipan Southern High School, 38-24, on Saturday at the MHS gym.

It was MHS’ Kalista McDonald who opened the scoreboard with a bucket while team-mate Sha Aina Mendoza followed up with two points via free throw.

Although Yasmeen Younis kept SSHS’ hopes alive with three consecutive shots, MHS still led the first half with Destiny Pangelinan and Angellyn Roligat contributing six points each while Raenna Ramaru added four.

Down 10-26, SSHS started to pick up the pace in the second half. MHS extended its lead with Pangelinan in the frontline, but SSHS kept up the fight with Tajilyn Ramon igniting the run with a shot while Younis followed up with a triple.

SSHS, however, could not stop  MHS’ onslaught as Ramaru, Helenor Ogumoro and Pangelinan connected the last three buckets to seal the deal, 38-24, and bag their fourth championship in as many years.

“I thought they played extremely well — I’m happy with their performance,” said MHS Coach Dan Wollak.

The team’s chemistry is one of their biggest strengths, he said, adding that eight of them have been playing together for the past four years.

“They trained hard for the past two months, and they have been playing together for so long that they gel,” he added.
