NSA Election, low turnout; Speaker voted out

The results of the election, though still unofficial, has guaranteed seats for most of the incumbent members representing the respective hamlets of the state – Abraham Osima (Ollei), Immanuel Maldangsang (Ngerbau), Kalistus Wasisang (Ngriil), and Caleb Tekriu (Ngebei) – and new faces into Ngarchelong’s political arena, Dorothy Kuroda (Ngeiungel) and Ngirablau Sambal (Iyebukel).  Absentee ballots will determine who will represent the hamlets of Mengallakl (incumbent assemblyman James S. Ultirakl or Alvina Merur) and Ngermetong (incumbent assemblyman Pasqual Imetengel or Allen Kangichi).

Kuroda ran unopposed and garnered the entire votes cast for Ngeiungel hamlet.  Sambal, on the other hand, ran against two prominent candidates, NSA Speaker Koichi West and Spis Midar.  The results indicate that Sambal received nearly half of the votes cast for the hamlet of Iyebukel – more than the votes received by West and Midar combined. The break down of all results by hamlets follows:  Ollei – 72 votes cast, Osima received 62; Mengallakl – 114 votes cast, Ultirakl 46, Merur, 41, Hirohito Renguul, 25 (waiting on absentee ballots to determine winner); Ngerbau – 30 votes cast, Maldangsang received 25; Ngermetong – 26 votes cast, Imetengel 10 and Kangichi 16 (waiting on absentee ballots to determine winner); Ngriil – 24 votes cast, Kalistus Wasisang received 23; Iyebukel – 65 votes cast, Sambal 32, West 17, and Midar 14; Ngeiungel – 14 votes cast, Kuroda received all of the votes; and Ngebei – 26 votes cast, Tekriu received 23.Ngarchelong has approximately 980 registered voters and only 371 (38%) went to the polls to vote – Ollei, 245 (72/245 – 29%); Mengallakl, 271 (42%); Ngebei, 141(26/141 – 18%); Ngeiungel, 18 (14/18 – 78%); Ngriil, 31 (24/31 – 77%); Iyebukel, 115 (65/115 – 57%); Ngerbau, 127 (30/127 – 24%); and Ngermetong, 32 (26/32 – 81%).
