NMI ports lack proper storage for confiscated pesticides

At the end of the whole-day session at the multi-purpose center, the participants said there is a need for a proper storage room for imported items, especially pesticides confiscated at the CNMI’s ports of entry.

The training session was conducted by the CNMI Division of Environmental Quality and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency. It was attended by over 25 participants from the Division of Customs Service, the Division of Agricultur’s Quarantine Unit and the Bureau of Environmental Health.

DEQ spokeswoman Reina Camacho said customs, quarantine and health inspectors also recommended follow-up meetings in order to have better view of the everyday situation and come up with more effective means of screening imported items.

These inspectors believe that continuing dialogue and constant communication among responsible agencies are important, Camacho said.

The training, she added, provided inspectors more tools and knowledge in detecting illegal imported items.
