CUC may overhaul Engines 5 & 7 using own manpower

Using its own manpower is now one of the options CUC is considering while an evaluation committee is reviewing the two proposals it received from two companies interested in overhauling the engines, according to CUC Executive Director Antonio Muna.

He said CUC intends to “increase its participation” in the overhaul program based on its available manpower.

CUC can also cancel the original request for proposals and issue another one.

Muna said they will decide this week what option to adopt in order to fast-track the overhaul of the  engines

CUC terminated its $5.1 million contract with DCM Group in July 2008 after the company failed to satisfactorily comply with the requirements of its contract.

CUC then announced an emergency request for proposals for the overhaul work on Engines 5 and 7 at Power Plant 1.

Muna said CUC is looking into the specifications of the overhaul work in relation to the proposal of the vendors.

In his earlier report, Muna said Engines 5 and 7 could produce 22 megawatts of power that could eventually replace the 15 megawatts provided by Aggreko.

CUC, he added, can terminate its 12-month Aggreko contract without losing power production.

At present, only Engines 3, 6, and 8 are working at Power Plant 1 and producing at least 15 megawatts.
