CUC not expecting recurring power outages

CUC’s power plant mechanics, he added, are doing their part to prevent power failures and interruptions.

Engines continue to break down, but CUC is trying to ensure a satisfactory distribution of power supply to the island, Muna said.

On Tuesday, the CUC was temporarily unable to generate adequate electrical power to meet the island’s demand.

Garry P. Camacho, power division manager, said the lack of generation was due to the emergency shutdown of two engines at Power Plant 1.

Engine 3 was secured at 1 a.m. for emergency repairs that had to be performed on cylinder head 12 whose exhaust valve was damaged.

The mechanical repairs were completed on Tuesday at 5 p.m., Camacho said in a press release.

He said engine 6 was also secured on Friday for another emergency repair of its turbo charger support, adding that the repair was completed on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

High temperatures compounded CUC’s difficulties as the high peak demand exceeded  available generation, Camacho said.

Because of the problem, an unscheduled power interruption was experienced at Feeder 1, comprising the area of Upper MIHA, Duty Free lateral and Upper Chinatown lateral from 11:30 a.m. to 1:07p.m.

Also affected was the second partial under Feeder 2 — from Tony Romas to the Microl intersection, 12:52 p.m. to 1:56 p.m.
