5 teams to compete in upcoming women’s futsal league

This came after the NMIFA’s futsal boot camp concluded on Saturday last week with an additional 17 players registering for the league.

Last Saturday’s boot camp conducted three futsal skills: dribbling/passing, defense, and scrimmage.

“We have 53 [total number of] registrants for the league. So we’ll make five teams with that,” Davis said, saying there will be four teams that will play in the opening day of the league.

Davis mentioned that they were hoping they could muster six teams, but she noted that five teams are already enough to carry on with the league.

She also said the women’s committee is excited to see this season’s futsal league, pointing out that all registrants were able to learn the basics of the game.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Davis said. “This will develop everyone’s skills.”

She reminds that women’s futsal league is more about fun than competing.

“We wanted to get people who’s interested in playing, but maybe don’t have experience, to come out and have fun,” Davis said.

When asked if different age levels of the participants would be a problem in the matches, she pointed out that age will not be an issue.

The women’s futsal league has accepted young women from age 14 and up.

Sponsors for the league are CarlSmith Ball law office and Wild Bills.

“We’re working on some other sponsors for the league,” Davis added.

The Women’s Futsal League will run from October 11 to December 6, with games every Saturday.

Futsal is known as five aside, or indoor soccer, and is a sport that demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and accurate ball control.

It is played on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, requiring players to use their skill rather than the ball’s bounce to propel it.
