Man charged for punching wife’s face

Judge Kenneth L. Govendo yesterday ordered Shou Ji Zheng to post a $1,000 cash bail and obey several court conditions including surrendering his passport and travel documents.

The defendant is not allowed to leave the CNMI without the court’s permission, and he was also ordered to stay away from the victim. Even if the victim comes near him, he must leave.

Shou Ji Zheng appeared in court with his lawyer Matthew J. Holley. The government was represented by Assistant Attorney General Rebecca Warfield.

Govendo set the arraignment for Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. and the preliminary hearing for Oct. 14 at 9 a.m.

Detective Simon T. Manacop in his affidavit stated that they received a report about a domestic disturbance at the Marianas Noni Apartments in Chalan Kanoa at about 10:50 p.m. on Oct. 2.

Manacop said  Officer Daniel Quitugua, who was dispatched to respond to the scene, met the victim with a swollen right eye.

The victim told the police that her husband had beaten her up. She led the police officer to where her husband was sleeping. The defendant was  arrested.

Police officer learned that prior to the incident, the defendant just came home after playing poker and this triggered an argument between the couple.

When the victim told the defendant he was wasting money, the defendant punched her in the eye twice.

She called for help from the neighbors but she refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment when medics arrived a few minutes later.
