Dig into the Edible Book Contest

THE Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is calling on the community to join the Edible Book Contest on Thursday, April 27.

Participants must decorate a cake whose theme is based on their favorite work of literature.

If you like Harry Potter, Dr. Seuss, manga or any of the other titles found in the library, this is the contest for you.

“Everyone can have super fun taking part in the Edible Book Contest because this is one way you can let your creativity run wild,” JKPL Technical Services Librarian Beth Demapan said.

Cupcakes can be entered into the contest as well, she added.

“You can also work in a group and make new friends putting together your masterpiece,” she said.

According to a JKPL media release, the cake can “look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a book or author, can be a pun of a book title, can refer to a book character, reproduce a book cover, or just have something to do with books in general.”

Participants must register today and be a library cardholder. One hundred percent of the design must be edible and the theme should be kid-friendly.

The cake must be 18 x 24 inches or smaller, and will be on display at the library for three hours without refrigeration. Ingredients must not be extremely perishable. A copy of the actual book that inspired the cake should also be on display.

All cakes need to be displayed in the library from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 27. After 2 p.m., the library will take a photo of the cakes and display them on social media.

The contest winner will be selected based on a combination of onsite voting and virtual voting on JKPL’s social media pages.

According to JPL, “All onsite voters will be counted [five times].” Virtual voting will close on May 2 at 10 a.m.

Registration forms are available at the library. For more information, call Kaleina Reyes, events coordinator, at (670) 235-7318.
