Gas prices down again by 15 cents; diesel, 30 cents

MOBIL Oil Marianas and Shell Marianas reduced their fuel prices on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

This is the fifth fuel price rollback in July.

The regular gas price went down to $5.71 a gallon from $5.86 a gallon; the premium gas price to $6.16 a gallon from $6.31 a gallon; and diesel to $6.68 a gallon from $6.98 a gallon.

Calvo Enterprises on Rota had not implemented Tuesday’s new prices, but it already reduced its prices in response to last week’s rollback. The regular gas price on Rota dropped to $7.34 a gallon from $7.49 a gallon while the price of diesel went down to $10.52 a gallon from $10.57 a gallon.

Tinian Fuel Services, too, had yet to implement Tuesday’s rollback, but it also reduced its prices last week. The regular gas price on Tinian fell to $7.45 a gallon from $7.90 a gallon while the diesel price slid down to $8.50 a gallon from $9.05 a gallon.

The fuel price rollbacks have improved their chances to catch more fish, said local fisherman Mags Yunting. He said they usually buy more than $200 worth of gas for the boat. This amount of gas, he said, can bring them as far as Farallon de Medinilla.

Because of continuing fuel price rollbacks, Yunting said they no longer have to spend $200 on gas.

“Today, we will just consume 15 gallons,” he said. Previously, they needed 30 gallons of gas to reach their target catch for the day.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “although demand is rising, it’s not meeting the typical highs the market sees during the summertime. In fact, demand could be compared to demand during July 2020, when Covid-19 restrictions lead to fewer people on the road. The lack of demand is allowing gasoline inventories to re-stock with an increase of 3.5 million barrels last week.”

AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross, for his part, said consumers “appear to be taking the pressure off their wallets by fueling up less. And there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic that pump prices will continue to fall, particularly if the global price for oil does not spike.”
