Police arrested for firing gun

In a press conference yesterday, Department of Public Safety Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela said Police Officer Nick C. Leon Guerrero, formerly assigned to the Police Academy as a drill instructor, was arrested and was transported to the Department of Corrections for processing on Sunday.

But Tudela said Leon Guerrero was released later.

It was learned that at about 5:27 p.m. on Nov. 2, DPS Central received a report of disturbance in Garapan.

Police officers were immediately dispatched to the residence of Leon Guerrero.

Tudela said  preliminary investigation showed an argument took place between family members which prompted Leon Guerrero to discharge his firearm.

“Leon Guerrero was off duty at the time, and it was a personal firearm he discharged, not a DPS-issued gun,” Tudela said.

He added that Leon Guerrero’s gun had already been confiscated.

“This case has been forwarded to the Internal Affairs Unit pending further investigation,” Tudela said.

Leon Guerrero has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the Internal Affairs Office investigation.

Tudela said Leon Guerrero may face suspension or other forms of disciplinary action.

“This will, however, depend on the result of the investigation. The case will then be forwarded to the Attorney General Investigative Unit,” Tudela said.

He added that Leon Guerrero has been with DPS for over 15 years, and this is the first time that he got involved in a case like this.
