Fitial to meet with officials of Indian energy firm

Saipan Republicans Senate President Pete P. Reyes and Speaker Arnold I. Palacios were also invited to the meeting slated  for today at the governor’s office.

Fitial told the two lawmakers in a letter that the company is “credible, well-capitalized…and may offer viable energy solutions for the CNMI’s energy crisis.”

He added, “As all you should know, this administration alone will not be able to address our energy crisis by itself, independently, without the vital support of the legislative branch of government. I seek your assistance in meeting the energy needs of our islands and I look forward to meeting with you.”

He did not disclose the company’s name.

The administration is renting Aggreko generators for $6 million a year, and the current contract is set to expire in Sept. 2009.

Without these generators, CUC, which has failed to maintain its power plants, cannot provide the island the power supply it needs.
