CPA accepting proposals for third airport generator

CPA Executive Director Efrain Camacho said a third generator is necessary to add to the existing two units so they can be capable of supplying the airport with the needed power in case of an islandwide power outage.

He said a third generator will serve as a back-up.

Camacho earlier said the delivery of the third generator was expected sometime during the early part of 2010.

CPA was looking at having the two generators up and running by Dec. 21, or four days before Christmas day.

“If the repairs will not be finished, then we hope to have both units working by the end of the month, or certainly by the middle of January next year,” Camacho said.

He added that by then, CPA will have its own power capabilities to provide electricity in case of an islandwide power outage.

He said the federally funded repairs costs over $200,000 and the work took five months.

The inadequate power supply of CPA has posed a risk to airlines and caused inconvenience to passengers during power outages in the past before the installation of the Aggreko generators last September.

Camacho said the airport’s two main generators provide electricity to the terminal operation.

He added that only one generator has been sustaining the airport’s daily operation since July this year.

He said one generator provides power only to the runway and the navigational lights which include the landing system.
