After graduating from the Upward Bound Program in 2000, Evangelista entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland to be certified as a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Marine Corps.

At the academy, Evangelista earned a bachelor’s degree in information technology.

He also took aviation training for his recently earned “Wings of Gold” certification. He credits former Gov. Juan N. Babauta for helping him choose a military career.

During his recent visit to Northern Marianas College, Evangelista offered some advice to current Upward Bound Students.

He told the students about sacrifices and challenges that lie ahead, and that there was rewarding outcome in the end.

Evangelista also provided some insight about how he was admitted to the academy and how he completed the rigorous program.

Further, he stressed that the Upward Bound Program was a great program that helped him prepare for college.

The Upward Bound Program at Northern Marianas College is a federally funded program designed to help participants prepare for college.

The program provides instruction in a variety of subjects; academic, financial, and personal counseling; tutorial and mentoring services; assistance with college admission forms and placement tests; and other services.

Rota Resort has new GM

ROTA — JMSH LLC is proud to announce the appointment of Simon Yang, the current general manager of the Holiday Resort & Spa Guam, as the new general manager of the Rota Resort & Country Club, a media release said.

Yang oversees the Holiday Resort & Spa Guam and will now add the responsibility of managing the Rota Resort & Country Club to his belt.

Previously, he was the executive assistant manager of the Saipan World Resort involved in the resort renovation and opening of the property.

The Rota Resort & Country Club was acquired in Aug. 2008 and continues to provide hotel and golf accommodations to its guests.

Open entrances to most greens let the higher handicapper play along the ground but at some 7,093 yards from the back tees, the course can also give better golfers all they can handle.

Yang continues to explore various opportunities to exert his leadership qualities and stays committed to promoting both the Holiday Resort & Spa Guam and the Rota Resort & Country Club internationally.

With a strong management team from both properties behind him, his democratic leadership style is proving to be an asset to the JMSH family of properties.

DFS Saipan honors employees of the year

DFS Saipan Ltd. recognized Tomoko Esteves, sales associate at Tiffany and Rodrigo San Pedro, team leader at the warehouse, as 2008 DFS Employees of the Year Award at the annual DFS Christmas party on Dec. 19, a media release stated.

Tomoko, the winner for the Sales category, was nominated by her manager Tessie Duenas.

Her warm and attentive customer service is highly evaluated by many customers.

She listens to customers very closely so that she can give them the very best suggestions.

Her warm personality easily grows not only on the customers but on her colleagues as well, and her funny and comical side is a stress reliever.

She cares for her colleagues and it enables DFS to raise an effective team in the Tiffany boutique.

She is dedicated and takes initiative and ownership of her brand, knowing that the outcome is for the good of her team.

Tomoko has been with DFS since Aug. 2007.

Rodrigo, the winner for the support category, has excellent punctuality, consistently having perfect attendance every month.

He is in charge of receiving luxury boutiques’ merchandise and processing and tagging them with high responsibility.

He is also in charge of our weekly general air freight and sea fright delivery every week, work which he does extremely efficiently and on a timely basis.

Rodrigo is also very good in keeping the warehouse neat, clean and well-stocked at all times.

He has excellent initiative, productivity, and teamwork.

“We all agree that he is a very dependable hard worker and a great asset to the company,” DFS management stated.

Rodrigo has been with DFS since July 1994.

NMC hosts free information session

(NMC) — Those interested in furthering their education and advancing their professional careers are encouraged to attend Northern Marianas College’s free information session which will be held on Jan. 5, 2009, in Room D-1 on the As Terlaje campus, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Representatives from different degree and certificate programs, as well as counseling, financial aid and admissions staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Current students will also be speaking about their experiences at NMC and will be also be fielding questions.

Individuals who attend this free information session will qualify to have their application fee and their placement test fees waived for the Spring 2009 semester. This represents a savings of about $75.

NMC offers several degree and certificate programs, including a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, associate degrees in business, liberal arts, nursing, natural resource management, criminal justice, hospitality management, and more.

Moreover, it offers certificate programs in different vocational, academic, and professional areas.

The free information session is open to everyone, including graduating seniors and their parents, government and private sector employees, international students, and members of the general public who are interested in learning more about the programs at NMC.
