Man who punched ex-girlfriend gets 7-day jail term

Associate David A. Wiseman imposed a one-year sentence on 36-year-old Huiliang Gao, all suspended except for seven days with credit for time served. Wiseman also placed the defendant on two years probation.

The defendant will pay a fine of $200 and a court assessment fee of $25, and render 200 hours of community work service. He will also write a letter of apology and stay away from the victim. He will seek full time employment and not leave the CNMI without court permission.

Wiseman ordered the defendant to report to the Department of Corrections on Jan. 2, 2009 at 8 a.m. He will be released on Jan. 8 at 8 a.m. Wiseman set the review hearing for April 15, 2009.

The defendant, represented by  attorney Richard Miller, entered into a plea agreement with the commonwealth yesterday.

The defendant, who was charged with three separate counts of assault and battery and one count for disturbing the peace, pleaded guilty to one count of assault and battery.

He admitted  hitting his ex-girlfriend with a cigarette on July 11, 2008.

Assistant Attorney General Rebecca Warfield appeared on behalf of the government.

Court documents stated that the defendant punched the victim’s head several times, kicked her in the leg and hit her back with a cigarette.
