After the cabinet meeting on Monday, Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes said the governor expressed confidence in the leadership of Muna and dismissed calls for the CUC chief’s resignation.
Reyes said the present administration is aware that Muna faces enormous problems inherited from previous leaderships.
Muna, Reyes added, cannot solve these problems, which have accumulated over the years, overnight.
Reyes said politics is one of the factors why CUC has been “grossly mismanaged,” but added that the Fitial administration is trying its best to establish an effective and efficient utilities agency.
To address CUC’s problems, he said the administration is considering all workable options to achieve a steady power production on island.
These include the recent proposal from Ras Tek Group, a major energy company from India.
The group is interested in a $60 million build-operate-transfer scheme for the engines of Power Plant 1.
Ras Tek specializes in diesel/gas engine-based power plants and in the marine industry.
Reyes said the governor will discuss Ras Tek’s proposal with lawmakers.
Last week, Ras Tek representatives met with the governor, some of his cabinet members and key lawmakers to discuss the company’s power generation proposal for Saipan.
