Customs officers picked up trash from KB Bridge to Ice Box and Palau Community College grounds base on a theme: Customs & Environment: Protecting Our National Heritage.
This is the second year in a row that Palau Bureau of Customs has held activities to celebrate the International Customs Day, which is observed world wide every 26th of January.Last year, the Bureau of Customs held a fishing derby and donated the catch to the Belau National Hospital.Yesterday, a K9 demonstration was conducted in front of students.The officers also displayed different educational materials that portrayed the agency’s duties and responsibilities.According to Customs Officer Tim Akitaya, a display of that items such as cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and other items that were confiscated at the airport, port and post office was set up to make people aware of things that are illegal to import or possess when entering into Palau.“These activities and displays, will make people aware of what we do and how we operate on a daily basis,”he said.“We are here also to promote environmental awareness and to encourage the public to protect our environment,”he added.
