Fitial wants to meet GTC principal

He said the governor’s office is now scheduling a meeting with Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School’s principal this week.

Last week, Reyes said they were not able to meet with the school officials to resolve the issue regarding the funds for the repair of GTC’s classrooms.

The funds were reportedly allotted for the construction of a  soccer facility in Koblerville.

Reyes said the governor is willing to assist in the reprogramming of more federal capital improvement projects funds for the Public School System.

PSS, he added, can now use the $1.2 million from Interior once the school system complies with the federal requirements.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is expected to discuss with the GTC principal the funding  needed for the rehabilitation of the school’s three dilapidated buildings.

GCT received a failing mark from the  Bureau of Environmental Health for the school’s failure to repair  its buildings.

In 2008, the Board of Education submitted the list of projects for classroom repair, including  $66,000 for GTC.

PSS then prepared a reprogramming requesting of $1.2 million for the repair of Saipan classrooms.

Last year,  Interior approved the request.

Last month, the Northern Marianas Housing Corp., which handles  federal community block grants, cancelled the funding for GTC’s repair project.

GTC acting principal Charlotte Camacho said NMHC approved the school’s grant request on Sept. 24, 2008.

GTC was supposed to get $800,000 from NMHC.
