San Antonio school celebrates Valentine’s Day through poetry

The school  held a Valentine’s Haiku & Poetry Contest for all the students, according to teacher Rita Carreon, the school’s public relations officer.

Today, during the school-wide assembly, the winning entries will be read on the stage after the awarding ceremony.

Sibylla Guerrero, a reading research teacher and one of the judges, said all students from kindergarten to sixth grade participated in the contest but only the two top entries were selected from each classroom.

The theme’s contest was “Friendship and Caring,” and Guerrero said the students were able to express their feelings and sentiments about Valentine’s Day.

The children could write  acrostic poems, rhymed  verse or haiku.

Guerrero said the activity was geared to “connect” Valentine’s Day to a learning activity.

She added that there’s a need to improve the language skill of the students.

“We want to show things about Valentine’s which are appropriate for children,” she said.

The other judges were teacher Dino Taitano and school principal Katrina Lizama.

The winners in the second and third grade division were Anthony Sablan, first place; Denise Bicera, second; and   Paula Francisco, third.

For the fourtth-sixth grade division, the winners were Reynafe Aniga, first place; Zion Castro, second; and Cornessa Dela Cruz, third.

Guerrero said the student council will hold a fundraising Valentine’s Day Dance in the cafeteria in the evening.
