Sablan, said in an interview on Wednesday, said he joined the Democratic caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives because he believes in the ruling party’s philosophy.
A CNMI Democrat, Sablan won last year’s delegate election as an Independent candidate.
Whether its government is run by Democrats, Covenant or Republicans, the CNMI can still have a good working relationship with the federal government, he said.
“President Obama is a Democrat, both houses in the U.S. Congress are led by Democrats but that does not mean we are going to become Democrats just because they are,” Sablan said.
Asked what advice he can give to the struggling local Democratic Party, Sablan said leaders of political parties should know the best approach in dealing with party matters.
In a separate interview, NMI Democratic Party Chairman Manny Sablan said nobody seems interested to replace him.
The chairman wants to resign because no one wants to run as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.
Now, he said, they are also having hard time looking for his replacement.
