The donation, according to a representative of the embassy, of taro – all of which are genetically purified species of local taro – was cultivated at and harvested from the Taiwan-Palau Agriculture Technical Mission (TTM) at Nekken, Aimeliik. The TTM has, over the years, cultivated a number of local staple produce, fruits, and vegetables and has been conducted collaborative workshops with Bureau of Agriculture to promote the health of the people by assuring that healthy local produce not only is abundant but also is accessible and affordable. TTM’s efforts have enhanced the relationship between Taiwan and Palau.
Taiwan has, over the years, contributed to the development of Palau in terms of its infrastructure – road construction, agricultural developments, aquaculture developments, medical and health advancements, and professional consultations and trainings.Taiwan has funneled millions of dollars to fund most of Palau’s recent infrastructure projects – the state economic stimulus packages for roads, docks, and construction of buildings.The donation marks the second time this year that the Taiwan Embassy has donated taro to the school. Last month the embassy donated about 1,500 pounds of taro to support the food service program of some of the public schools – those schools that had established ties with the embassy – in Palau. The recent donation will be distributed to schools that did not receive any portion of the last donation.
