Island Explorer

It is one night where barriers are dropped between races and nationalities and everybody is there to challenge and satisfy their gustatory cravings, a night where families, friends and strangers rub elbows and mingle with each other in partaking of the sumptuous island delicacies while squatting on the sidewalks.

It’s one colorful, lively night when street food becomes the hit, where for a dollar you can have sizzling pork, chicken or beef barbeque, or corn dribbling with butter which you can nibble on as you go around; where you can pick six choices of viand for five bucks. A real deal, indeed!

Hopping from booth to booth and choosing from the various culinary fares set out by different restaurants and food outlets is a mouth-watering experience.

Also available are locally-made crafts like fashion jewelry, hats, bags, home décor, imported products, novelties, locally grown vegetables, fresh fruits and a lot more.

My favorite treats at the Thursday market are sesame balls or “butche” which are sold for three pieces a dollar, and pink cotton candy on a huge stick.

Every Thursday night, Garapan is the place to be, with cheap food and free entertainment from local artists, cultural groups and dancers, or off-island visitors.

If you haven’t been there yet, you are missing a lot. Check out Garapan on Thursday nights! There is always something for everyone.
