Zoning board won’t take rezoning requests for now

There has been a request to conduct public hearing on  rezoning  of properties some of which are not conforming with the zoning law.

Saipan Zoning Board Chairman Henry S. Hosfschneider said the board and the Saipan legislative delegation, which created the zoning law, should go back to table and discuss the matter before more rezoning requests are granted.

Hofschneider said  since the Saipan zoning law was enacted in 2007 and amended in 2008, there have been rezoning applications approved by the  legislative delegation.

Land owners apply for rezoning in order to move ahead with the plans they made  before the zoning law was enacted.

In many cases, Hofschneider said these rezoning applications involved properties that the owners want to use for purposes that do not conform with the zoning law.

He said although rezoning may be reasonable in some cases, the zoning board has denied some applications.

The zoning law, he added, has  the flexibility to address specific concerns.
