Organizers: Pistang Pinoy to draw bigger crowd this year

United Filipino Organization president Olive Yana said they have prepared a  program that involves a “very meaningful celebration” of the 111th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine independence.

“We have big sponsors this year and we are confident to have a bigger crowd,” she said.

Among their sponsors are IT&E, Budweiser and Coca Cola.

Although, this year’s program is almost similar to those of previous years, Yana said entertainers from hotels will be among the guest performers.

Yana said the Philippine Consulate General, in collaboration with UFO, has prepared games and activities for children and adults.

Philippine Independence Day is observed on June 12, but Pistang Pinoy will be held on June 14, a Sunday, at 10:30 a.m. at the Civic Center in Susupe.

At 7 a.m., volunteers from the Hardt Eye Clinic and the Commonwealth Health Center will conduct a free health screening for blood pressure, sugar level and vision check-up.

Yana is also encouraging Filipinos on Rota and Tinian to initiate a separate gathering that will “give more meaning to the observance of our Independence Day.”

UFO and Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL. Maximo are inviting the entire Saipan community to the Sunday event.

Yana said they expect Maximo, who will end his tour of duty in the CNMI on June 30, to deliver a special message.

The organizers are still accepting application from food, she added.

On June 7, the Philippine Consulate General office will spearhead the  joint celebration of Philippine Independence Day and Migrant Workers Day at the Marianas Business Park in Susupe at 7 a.m.

The celebration will kick off with the traditional flag-raising ceremony to be attended by representatives of Filipino organizations, the Philippine Consulate General, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration led by Maximo, Consul Belinda M. Ante, Labor Representative Joan Lourdes D. Lavilla and Welfare Officer Reynaldo D. Tayag.
