Based on the latest statistics from the Probation Office, 2,557 of the total number of active persons on probation are on Saipan, 90 are on Tinian and 69 are on Rota.
Persons on active probation are convicts who are released from imprisonment but are still under court supervision.
The reports showed that assessment fines in the three islands from Jan. 1 to July 16, 2009 reached $72,175, or a total of $1,699,678.46 including carry over amount in fines and assessment fees from the previous years.
Restitution fees assessed for the same period reached $177,909.40 for Saipan and Tinian. No restitution fees were assessed on Rota.
As of July 16, the ending balance for restitution fees assessed reached $1,116,307.23 including the carry over balance from the previous years.
The Probation Office on Saipan has four active warrants while Rota and Tinian had none.
Last year, there were 2,978 active persons on probation. This figure has dipped slightly from the total number of active probationers in 2007 which is 3,100. The 2006 figures showed the lowest for the three-year period with only 2,790 active persons on probation.
In 2008, the Probation Office had made a total of 1,188 court appearances for review hearings, restitution and for revocation hearings. They had also submitted 1,211 pretrial service/investigation reports including indigent assessments, pre-post sentence investigations, restitution assessments, review hearing reports, and revocation reports filed at the Attorney General’s Office.
The Probation office had also issued a total of 47 bench warrants and 176 pending bench warrants, made 2,978 referrals for criminal, diversion and traffic cases.
They had also conducted 529 alternative sentence or prevention and referrals including counseling, probation orientation, crime prevention and common sense parenting classes.
