DFEMS Public Information Officer Robert Mojica stated that on Feb. 15 at 6:51 p.m., a woman called 911 reporting that both she and her husband were in the Marpi area and got lost while hiking.

At 6:53 p.m., Engine-2, Rescue-1, Medic-2, and back-up medic responded to the location.

Back-up medic was the first to arrive on scene at 7:05 p.m. and immediately search the area for the hikers and their vehicle.

Mojica said, over the phone, the hikers were then directed by fire dispatch to try and call one of the responding units on the scene.

One of the hikers managed to call the search and rescue or SARU commander, Capt. Pat Ogo, who stayed on the phone and helped guide the hikers out of their location.

At 7:49 p.m., Ogo and another member of his SARU team got into contact with the hikers.

Once the hikers’ location was identified, Mojica said it was sent to other responding units.

Medic-2 fire personnel then hiked to the hikers’ location for a health and wellness assessment.

“Both hikers were deemed in good health, and no further injuries were found,” Mojica said.

After supplying the hikers with some water and allowing them to rest, they were both escorted to safety. Both refused further medical treatment.

At 9:33 p.m., the all-clear orders were given and all responding units were ordered to return to base.
