Tennis: Elliot, Woo top 2022 White Coconut Classic singles

HYEJIN Elliot and Jimin Woo outshined the competition in their respective 2022 White Coconut Classic  divisions held over a three-day weekend at American Memorial Park.

Hyejin Elliot played flawlessly to win the women’s singles title.

In her first match, she overwhelmed Jeanne Bracken with quick and powerful attacks to bag an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Elliot’s second match was against Gillian Lucero who was a tougher opponent. In the first set, Lucero stood toe-to-toe with Elliot and won three games. However, consistency was the key and that was where Elliot excelled as she outhustled her opponent to win the first set, 6-3.

In the second set, Elliot committed no errors as she dispatched Lucero 6-0 to reach the final round.

 Against her perennial rival in the title match, Serin Chung, Elliot was relentless, clinching victory in the first set, 6-2.

 In the  second set, Elliot continued to control the pace with successive returns  to again win 6-2 and secure the championship.

To reach the final round, Chung overpowered both Bracken and Lucero,  6-0, 6-0.

Men’s

In the men’s singles, Jimin Woo sailed smoothly to the championship round.

Against Andy Kim, Woo asserted his dominance with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Colin Ramsey, for his part, beat Isaac Heo 6-4, 6-3 and Sam Ryu 7-6(3), 6-2 to reach the finals.

Ramsey, however, could not match Woo’s skills. Woo claimed the championship,  6-2, 6-2.

Other winners

Marivic Dunlop bagged the women’s singles 40 title with three consecutive wins for six points while Irin Chung claimed the girls singles 14 championship in a nail-biting finale against Hoo Wang, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2.

As for Stella Choi, she swept the girls singles 10 division with three straight wins to earn six points.

In the male categories, June Yu won all four matches to collect eight points and bring home the boys singles 16 crown.

His toughest match was against Simon Tang who lost to Yu in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 3-10.

Also joining the winner’s circle were Siwoo Lee who defeated Nason Wessel 6-3, 6-4 in the boys singles 14 finale; Ian Chae who snatched the boys singles 12 title from Jihun Park 6-2, 6-2; and Cody Park who ruled the boys singles 10 division by defeating Michael Jeon 6-3.
