15 community health workers completes Directly observed treatment course

Directly observed treatment (DOT) or directly observed therapy is watching the patient take his/her medication to ensure medications are taken in the right combination and for the correct duration. It is used for diseases such as tuberculosis (TB).

Henreitta Merai, trained the community health workers who will ensure that patients will visit TB patients every single day to ensure that they take their medicine.There were 39 applicants for the course and the Health Ministry screened them and took 19 for the course.However four of them found jobs before the course and only 15 completed it.The 15 all passed the course.There is a significant number of TB cases in Palau.Palau gives free medication to TB patients and are asked to take medicine and are observed for nine months.The 15 community health workers were given certificates of completion on Friday’s graduation ceremony.
