Palau activates special task force vs burglars

The task force also aims to reduce traffic accidents and conducted sobriety and compliance checkpoints on Aug. 27.

The task force is enforcing the curfew law for minors, as well as the laws on alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

While enforcing the curfew law for minors, the task force will check traveling vehicles.

The task force will process minors traveling around town or outside of their homes without the escort of parents or proper guardians during the curfew hours — from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

All loitering, particularly involving minors, will be dispersed. The minors will be brought to the police station for processing and their parents or guardians will be contacted.

The task force will monitor the downtown area and the business district.

All bars, stores, restaurants and public places as well as functions will be monitored to ensure that they are in strict compliance of the alcoholic beverages and tobacco products law.

The bureau is reminding all bars and store establishments of the “no sale and consumption of alcohol beyond 2 a.m.” law.

The members of the public, for their part, are reminded of the following rules:

• No consumption and possession of an open container of alcohol within 50 feet of a bar or store establishment;

• No consumption or possession of an open container of alcohol within a vehicle;

 • No consumption or open container of alcoholic beverages in all public places;

• No sale or contributing to the sale of alcohol to a minor;  and,

• No possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages by a minor and no sale of tobacco products to a minor —18 and below.

The sale of elaus with tobacco products to a minor is also illegal.

The Ice Box Park in Malakal is the only designated lawful place where drinking alcohol is allowed.

Public Safety Director Norvert H. Yano is asking for the cooperation and assistance of the public.

He is urging parents to supervise and monitor their children to ensure full compliance with the law.

He said all establishments and persons should take precaution to avoid becoming victims of burglaries, thefts and injuries.
