No fuel for Saipan mayor’s office

On Aug. 31, he said, his office was notified that it would not get its fuel allocation as the Department of Finance was still trying to address an unpaid account with a gasoline station.

“I was shocked when I received the message not authorizing us to get our fuel,” he said in an interview last week.

He said his branch office in  Lower Base was not able to dispatch its equipment and vehicles for its regular maintenance project.

There’s a budget for the fuel allowance but “the process of payment” was causing the delay, he said.

Tudela said this is a problem that  keeps on recurring but no new scheme has been adopted to prevent it from happening again.

The mayor’s office maintains heavy equipment and vehicles  used to pick up scrap metal, deliver water and filling materials for the road maintenance program.

“What we do now is to address a request based on priority, immediate need and importance,” the mayor said, adding that other government offices are experiencing a similar predicament.

He said the executive and legislative branches of government are aware of the situation and “they should do something to address the problem.”

Tudela said his office is badly affected and some of his personnel have already resigned or retired.
