PRO-IMPEACHMENT members of the public plan to stage a rally at the legislative building on Capital Hill, Wednesday, Jan. 12, when the House of Representatives holds a session to, among other things, adopt a resolution calling for the impeachment of Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.
At least 15 of the 20 House members are expected to vote for the passage of House Resolution 22-14, which accuses the governor of corruption, neglect of duty and felonies of theft. Torres, who will be the second CNMI governor to be impeached, has denied the allegations.
On Wednesday, Jan. 5, Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, issued a memorandum calling for a session that will begin at 10 a.m. on Jan. 12 in the House chamber.
The special committee report recommending the adoption of H.R. 22-14 will be presented to the floor for adoption before the members vote on the impeachment resolution.
Members of the community who want the governor impeached are sending out online invitations to other CNMI residents. “We can’t let one man continue to destroy our CNMI. Let’s all be there in support of impeachment, January 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the Legislature,” one of the invitations stated.
Another image depicted a clenched fist: “Rally at the CNMI Legislature, Jan. 12. Impeach Governor Torres. We Deserve Better.” On the palm of the hand were the following words: “On behalf of the JGO 670 CNMI People. FUETSAN PUBLIKU.”
The Legislative Bureau is currently implementing Covid-19 safety rules, but there will be an opportunity for public comments.
The House session, moreover, will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.
Violated
In other news, one of the governor’s vocal critics, military veteran and vlogger Fabian Indalecio, is complaining about the signs posted at the administration building stating: “No Photography, No Video Recording Without Express Written Permission.”
Indalecio said he feels like his constitutional rights are being violated.
He said the restriction was implemented because of an incident in March last year when he tried to see the governor to ask him about corruption allegations.
Indalecio said he posted a video of the incident on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uwyAFaERY4e
“When I came back those [signs] were all over the governor’s office already,” he added.
This image regarding a “rally” on Jan. 12 at the Legislature is circulating on social media.
Military veteran and vlogger Fabian Indalecio flashes the shaka sign outside the administration building on Thursday. The sign on the glass door reads, “No Photography, No Video Recording Without Express Written Permission.”
