123 additional Covid-19 cases; 2,917 new cases since Oct. 28

(CHCC) — 123 cases were confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Dec. 27, 28, and 29, 2021, bringing the CNMI total to 3,208 cases since March 28, 2020. The individuals have been isolated and are actively monitored.

As of Dec. 29, 2021, there had been 2,189 recoveries made, 718 active cases, and 10 deaths of the cases identified since Oct. 28, 2021.

Of the 13 deaths reported in the CNMI, 11 occurred since the availability of a Covid-19 vaccine. Of the 11 tragic deaths, 7 persons were unvaccinated (6) or partially vaccinated (1). Since the beginning of the pandemic, the estimated case-fatality is 0.4% and the mortality rate in the population is 27 deaths per 100,000 persons. For reference, the case-fatality for the U.S. is 1.5% and the mortality rate is 246 per 100,000 persons.

“We continue to encourage the community to get vaccinated if they have not done so, or get their booster shot if they are eligible,” CHCC said.

As of Dec. 29, 2021, there were 14 individuals hospitalized as a result of Covid-19 (10 unvaccinated, 4 vaccinated; 2 on a ventilator); and 4 were discharged.

Of the 123 new cases, 72 were identified on Dec. 29, 50 on Dec. 28, and 1 on Dec. 27; 28 were identified via contact tracing and 95 were identified via community testing.

The vaccination statuses of the 123 cases identified are pending verification.

A total of 300 Covid-19 vaccine shots were administered on Dec. 30, 2021, resulting in 94.4% of the CNMI’s eligible population being fully vaccinated, which affords the community more protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

Since Oct. 28, 2021, there have been 2,917 new cases, of which 1,461 were identified via contact tracing, 1,392 were identified via community testing, and 64 were identified via travel testing.

A total of 646 Covid-19 tests were conducted on Dec. 29, 2021, which comprises travel testing and surveillance testing but does not include DFEMS testing.
