Letter to the Editor: A bad joke

If you are trying to lead a decent honest life and teach your children to do the same this is a slap in the face to you. If you volunteer your time to Crime Stoppers or participate in a Neighborhood Watch program you may be wasting your time, because it is clear that in the CNMI there is no serious intent to control crime. Our prosecutors have failed. Our courts have failed. Our parole system has failed.

As far as I can see the only people that have done their jobs are the underpaid and often criticized people at Public Safety. After all, if they have arrested the same person 25 times they must be doing something right. It must be totally demoralizing for them to arrest the same people over and over again, only to see them back out on the street the next week.

We have a new state of the art correctional facility, but one thing that was overlooked in its design was a revolving door. It is time that our elected officials mandate serious jail time for repeat offenders, instead of considering legislation to “expunge” criminal records.
