First, let’s get the record straight Mr. Torres, WASC does not need NMC. NMC needs WASC. If we are to continue receiving millions of dollars of Pell grants, and in order for students’ grades to be transferable to other accredited colleges and universities in the United States, we better make sure our accreditation is not terminated.
Secondly, I recommend you read the WASC eligibility requirements referring to policy on commission actions and institutions, section C, and actions that terminate accreditation.
“If, in the judgment of the Commission, an institution has not satisfactorily explained or corrected matters of which it has been given notice, or has taken an action that has placed it significantly out of compliance with Commission Standards, its accreditation may be terminated. The Commission will give the institution written reasons for its decision. Termination of accreditation is subject to a request for review and appeal under the applicable policies and procedures of the Commission and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The accredited status of the institution continues pending completion of any review and appeal process the institution may request. Otherwise, the institution’s accreditation ends on the date when the time period permitting such a request expires. In such a case, the institution must complete again the entire accreditation process.”
Rep. Torres, your recent statements are very devastating to NMC’s accreditation status, but it shows how ill advised you are when it comes to POLITICAL INTERFERENCE!
Why didn’t you demand that the attorney general investigate Janet King’s action regarding the initial illegal appointment of her interim president? Next, why haven’t you spoken up when the board of regents paid for TWO COLLEGE PRESIDENTS IN THE AMOUNT OF $160,000? Is it because Lorraine Cabrera is your niece and is involved too?
You speak of fear of Dr. Beno. Let’s be clear. It is not the fear of Dr. Beno that we are worried about, it is the fear of NMC losing its accreditation. Sir, stop trying to hide the truth and stand up and do what is right. Don’t be another puppet of you know who.
You speak of Agnes McPhetres in your recent letter and how there were no issues during her presidency. If that is true, then I may just take the opportunity to ask “Interim President” Lorraine Cabrera for all accreditation reports, WASC visiting team reports and letters from Ms. McPhetres time to date and make a comparison. NMC was noncompliant with program review all the way back to 1990. This has been announced publicly. As stated by the student signs, “Stop the Politricks.”
Lastly, do you know what really transpired in the April 5, 2010 board meeting or “hearing”? This same meeting now has been postponed until a day before the visiting team steps foot on NMC campus. It was also stated that management will be selecting a group of representatives from various governance councils to meet with the visiting team. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought it was the other way around — it is the visiting team that determines who they need to meet. I would like Larry Lee to be the first interviewed. Lee appeared to violate accreditation policy when he went to the newspapers with comments made in the October 2009 Mid Term Report and visit which are supposed to be confidential. Thank you, Mr. Lee — and you are still a business instructor at NMC and still the Faculty Senate president? Where is the NMC faculty in all of this? Where is the administration? Oops, I forgot, you’re being protected by Janet King.
Your attacks on Dr. Beno are disrespectful and uncalled for. But Mr. Torres, we know where this is coming from. What else can we expect from you and your cohorts? Rep. Torres, let me thank you for making it quite easy for the accrediting commission to make a decision. I hope you’re proud of yourself, along with anyone that took part in this childish and nonsense fiasco. The agenda of a few may just have destroyed the future of our children who had hopes of furthering their education here at home.
