Letter to the Editor: Vision and the NMI

In her letter she mentioned the CNMI leaders’ want of vision for our islands. She did not report about the Department of the Interior’s confrontational attitude toward the CNMI as mentioned in the book.

“DOI needs to change its approach from being confrontational toward the CNMI  and  be reconciliatory in its contractual obligation and responsibility to aid the CNMI,” stated the author in his book. DOI and the U.S. Congress must also have a vision for the CNMI.

“At one peak in the Commonwealth history DOI, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands teamed and slashed out a quantity of  the 702 Covenant financial support that was owed to the CNMI by the U.S. Congress.  This occurrence was a result of the CNMI’s rebellious manner toward the U.S. Congress and Washington, D.C.”

I plead that this episode will not recur in the history of the commonwealth.

Ruth, this was discussed in the book but you did not mention it in your letter.

I believe that not only CNMI leaders need to have a clear vision for the CNMI, but the U.S. Congress and DOI as well. That is the VISION I perceive for the CNMI.
