500 Sails seeks program coordinator

500 Sails on Tuesday extended the job posting deadline for applicants interested in the program coordinator position at the non-profit organization.

The job listing now has an open deadline, meaning 500 Sails will take applications until the position is filled. Emails should be sent to [email protected]. Questions can be answered by calling (670) 323-7245.

500 Sails aims to “revive, promote, and preserve the maritime cultural traditions of the Mariana Islands.” The organization owns a boatyard in Lower Base where its staff fabricates Chamorro canoes using a historical blueprint called the Anson Drawing. It also provides free canoe rides to the community every Saturday at the 500 Sails Guma Sakman in Susupe.

According to the job description listed on 500 Sails’ Facebook page, the right applicant must have one to three years of administrative experience, experience with the logistics related to non-profit program work, and be available on weekends or outside normal work hours. An associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Managing Director Kuen-Hee Han said 500 Sails needs an employee who is ambitious.

“We just need someone who believes in what we do and is willing to work together to achieve our goals for the community. We dream big and that is the essence of 500 Sails,” Han said.

“To me, wholeheartedly believing in our mission is the most important part of the candidate. If you believe, you know that the tasks you are doing today [are] paving the way to make that larger dream into reality.”

Han said the program coordinator “will be working directly with me and needs to be detail-oriented to make sure the outputs are on a professional level.”

Applicants must also have the ability to swim or a willingness to learn how to swim.

“We are an island,” Han said. “If we do not have a relationship with the water, our lives become so limiting.”
