‘There’s More to the Story’ during Library Week at JKPL

THE Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is hosting a wide variety of fun activities for the public and the youth from April 20 to 29, in conjunction with National Library Week.

Beth Demapan, JKPL’s technical services librarian, issued an open invitation to the entire community to join the celebration.

She is enthusiastic about the work that JKPL does for the community, and hopes that this year’s Library Week is memorable.

“Libraries are important because they bring people together. This year’s National Library Week theme is ‘There’s More to the Story,’” Demapan said. “Libraries house thousands and thousands of stories that inspire people and unite communities. They are not just places to borrow books, they are also an essential resource for education, research and personal growth. Libraries are a safe space where people can explore different ideas, learn new skills, and connect with others in their community.”

This year’s Library Week events include solar eclipse activities from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 20.

Demapan said the library will pass out solar viewing glasses while supplies last, and will also conduct STEM learning activities.

She said the official proclamation signing ceremony will be held at JKPL on April 21 at 10 a.m.

Earth Day, held every year on April 22, will be a day for Earth Day Bingo. Demapan said participants can obtain bingo cards from the JKPL front circulation desk staff. Each bingo card has 24 Earth Day activities to complete. Participants who complete at least five activities and connect them on their cards will receive a prize.

On April 27, the library is hosting an Edible Book Contest which Demapan said is a cake decorating contest.

“Participants will need to fill out a registration form and create an edible book cake,” Demapan told Variety. “Each edible book creation must be a representation of a favorite fictional or non-fictional literary work. Edible books can look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a book or author, can be a pun of a book title, can refer to a book character, reproduce a book cover, or just have something to do with books in general.”

For Arbor Day, which coincides with National Library Week, Demapan is inviting the public to a tree planting activity taking place on April 28.
