The National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society are the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students.
NHS and NJHS have very stringent membership requirements.
To be considered, students must have at least 3.7 GPA and must go through a rigorous selection process.
The candidates are evaluated on the basis of character, leadership and service to the school and the community, and a five-member faculty council decides the admission of the candidates.
Parents, guests, and teachers assembled at the American Memorial Park theater.
Lighting of the white candle marked the beginning of the ceremony.
Led by formally dressed NHS and NJHS members, seven NJHS and 10 NHS inductees entered the theater, received the candles, recited the pledges and joined the honor societies.
Headmaster Dr. Dale Jenkins welcomed the guests and spoke briefly about the honor societies.
Adviser Ingur Lee spoke about the five ideals of the NHS and presented the candidates, and members welcomed the new members into the societies by passing the candle lights to them and congratulating them.
Warm reception by the members and guests was the focal point of the one-hour program.
For school year 2009-10, Saipan International School added Kennedy Izuka, Hunter Jewell, Dan Hee Kim, Nava Khorram, Andrea Loste, Kaylene Reyes, and Seoung Joon Lee to NJHS, and Ryun Ha, Dong Keun Hong, Amelia Hudkins, Zoe Jewell, Jian Joyner, Min Joo Jung, Mi Lin Kim, Amber Roberts, Kai Staal, and Svahn Tured to NHS.
To maintain membership, the new members must maintain the high standards and participate in a service project. For this year, NJHS and NHS members of SIS have been assisting the school-wide Accelerated Reading Program by labeling and cataloging the library books.
