TWO Department of Corrections officers are under investigation for allowing an inmate to physically assault a detainee.
Acting DOC Commissioner Anthony Torres on Thursday declined to give a statement when asked about the incident.
“I can’t give you a statement. The matter is currently under investigation. I appreciate your understanding,” he said.
About three weeks ago, one of the Corrections officers opened the cell pod of detainee Kevin Esteves, allowing an inmate from the general population cell pods into Esteves’s cell. The inmate then physically assaulted and injured Esteves, Variety learned.
After he was seen by medical responders, Esteves immediately called his lawyer.
Esteves, 32, has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. His case is pending in Superior Court.
