24 traffic fatalities reported in the past 8 years

Patrol Division Chief Ismael Aguon said that majority of these incidents happened on December and on Christmas time.

He said most of the incidents were treated as DUI and reckless driving incidents.

The statistics of the Patrol Division shows that 24 people died in traffic incidents since 2002 up to the present.

This year, police reported two fatalities and the incidents happened in February 8 and August 7 at the Malakal Neco Marine and Malakal Long Island causeway.

The victims were both men. The victim in the February incident was a driver of a vehicle when it figured in a car crash at 8:40 in the evening while the other fatality was a passenger of a vehicle. The second incident happened at 2 am.

In 2008, three fatalities were reported to the police. One of them was a pedestrian who was a victim of hit and run in September.

The victim was walking on her way home when hit by a car in Medalaii, in front of the Furusato restaurant.

The other fatalities were victims of car crash incidents. One of them was a passenger of a vehicle when it crashed on February 16 at Dngerongel and the other one was a driver of another vehicle that crashed in August at the Palau-Japan Friendship Bridge.

The 2007 statistics shows three fatalities; two of them involved car crash while the other one was a pedestrian. It all happened in April, October and December at the Topside by Kwik Mart, Ngchesar and Ngerias intersection.

For 2006, only one fatality was listed and it happened in September in Ngaraard State.

2005 listed five fatalities which happened in May, November and September at Meketii T-Dock, Ngatpang, Airai and Did ra Ngmatel.

There was no fatality in 2004 but in 2003, there were eight fatalities reported to the police.

One of them was a pedestrian incident while the rest were car crash incidents. It happened in March, June and December at Melekeok State, Long Island, T-Dock Meketii and Ren Rak Causeway.

Police reported two fatalities in 2002 and the incidents happened in August and in May at the Old Neco Makat and at the Ren Rak Causeway.

The Bureau of Public Safety is reminding the public to be more cautious in celebrating the holiday and not to drive if they are drunk.

“We should value our lives so let us all be safe during the holiday season and designate a driver if there is a need to go out and drink,” Aguon said.
