46 students participates LEEP camp

The campers, boys and girls and mostly elementary students, for ten days learned how to do basket weaving, spear making, coconut husking, knot tying, fishing and crab hunting.Police Officer Daniel Ruluked, LEEP Adviser and Secretary for the Program supervised the camp that started on June 5 and ended on June 15.The camp had 21 instructors, volunteers and kitchen crews. One of the instructors was Ismael Aguon, Chief of the Division of Patrol and Chairman of the LEEP Program.  Ruluked said the camp site was supposed to be held at the Camp Beck in Peleliu but due to the heavy rain and strong winds on the first day of camp, they relocated to Senior Citizen center, northern part of Peleliu.Officer Ruluked said that one of the highlights of the camp was the community service.The campers picked up trash and do house to house clean up at the houses and yards of the elders.The campers also cooked the fish that they catched and give it to the senior citizens.Ruluked said the campers also attended the customary funeral service for one of the LEEP members whose relative passed away.The campers were from Ngchesar Elementary School, Airai Elementary School, Koror Elementary School, Maris Stella School, George B. Harris Elementary School, Ngaremlengui Elementary School, Ngardmau Elementary School and Palau High School.Ismael Aguon Jr., 7th grade; Kuartel Remoket, 15, 8th grade and Michael Mutok, 15, 9th grade, all of GBH said that they all had fun during the camp and they learned a lot of things including dancing.“We learned how to dance cha cha and jitter bug dance, we learned discipline, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol,”Aguon Jr. said.Remoket said they also played different sports such as basketball, volleball, baseball, lawn bowling, dodge ball and swimming.The campers also met the traditional leaders and performed traditional songs.“We give the local people like the chiefs, time to come in and talk to the campers for sharing, then we did counseling, formation and drill, community services and other activities for the campers,”Ruluked said.The LEEP camp was done every end of the school year.
